To Burgos
I started early again this morning not because it was going to be hot but because I discovered yesterday that when you get up early and after all the fast people pass you, you end up walking all alone for several hours. I enjoy this time of solitude. I also wanted to start early today so that I could have some time to play tourist in Burgos.
The first town I passed today was the town of Atapuerca. It’s claim to fame is the oldest known humanoid found in Europe.
Birdsong today included the western yellow wagtail, my old friend the Corn Bunting, and a new and very beautiful one for me was the Northern Wheateater.
An observation: there are a lot of windmills in Spain.
A well placed advertisement as I walked today:
The first, approximately 12 km of the walk today was beautiful through fields and forest. The second 12 km was less beautiful as we came to the large city of Burgos. I took an alternate route, which took me down to walk by the river.
El Cid apparently came from Burgos, and there are many tributes to him around the old town.
The old town of Burgos is just beautiful. There are wide avenues, ancient buildings art everywhere.
The crowning glory of old Burgos is the cathedral. It is so beautiful it’s incredible. Pictures don’t do it justice but here’s a few.
